What to Look for When Choosing the Next Generation AirPods
The next generation of AirPods has become a daily favorite for many people who want to reduce noise and have clearer sound quality. It can be useful in a noisy house, in an open office, on the move, and many other situations. The earphones filter out external noise quite effectively, play music and calls clearly, and have additional features such as heart rate measurement and real-time translation. This combination of features is ideal for long phone calls, gym training, and daily commutes. If you need to hear announcements or pay attention to traffic conditions, Transparent Mode or Adaptive Mode is better. While the battery life is slightly shorter (about 6.5 hours) when the heart rate sensor is turned on, full translation and health management tools work best when combined with Apple products. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is lining up a refresh of its regular AirPods.
That’s the AirPods 5. These would replace the AirPods 4 that came out in 2024. Apple has stuck to a roughly two- to three-year cycle on the non-Pro buds (AirPods in 2016, 2 in 2019, 3 in 2021, 4 in 2024), so a 2026 update fits the pattern.
Gurman says Apple plans to debut the new AirPods at the September event. They’ll come in the same two versions we saw last time: a standard model and one with Active Noise Cancellation. Gurman confirmed the dual lineup in a follow-up post calling them the regular and noise-cancellation flavors. The camera-equipped AirPods that have been generating more buzz are a different project and aren’t expected until 2027.
Details beyond that are still thin. References to the unreleased models (codenamed B868M and B868E) showed up in macOS 26.7 code, which matches the pattern of the current AirPods 4. Apple is working on an H3 chip meant to cut lag and improve audio quality though it’s not clear yet whether the AirPods 5 will get it right away, H2 started on the Pro models before moving down. Gurman has said he doesn’t expect the heart-rate sensor from the AirPods Pro 3 to show up here but Apple is exploring more health features for AirPods over time including temperature sensing.
Pricing of Airpods 5 hasn’t been reported yet. The current AirPods 4 sit at $129 for the base model and $179 with ANC in the U.S. and most people expect the new ones to land in the same range unless the H3 chip pushes them higher. If Apple follows the same playbook as the AirPods 4 launch in 2024, pre-orders could open the day of the event with shipping and store availability a week or so later (around September 18).
